Van Varga started working with wood in 1991 and since 2001 has focused on fine woodworking. He also holds a BSc in biology and an MS in geology.

Van's current aesthetic interest is Japanese gardening. In his work he represents the simplicity, quality, and natural patterns of Japanese horticultural practices.

Over the past year Van has focused on components of workmanship, namely: dexterity, judgment, and shape determining systems. He takes the best practices of wood craft, handed down through tradition, and applies modern machine tools mediated through jigs, forms, molds, and gauges to extend those traditions.

The curved mitered shoulders of the mortice and tenons joints on the legs of "Lingerie Cabinet" required two custom-built jigs.
