Laird Cambell was born in Glasgow, Scotland and came to Canada via Montreal as a freelance Exhibition and Display Artist at Expo '67. Laird moved to Victoria in 1970, living and working in his downtown studio for almost twenty years. He moved to Port Alberni in 1992 to escape social distraction and to find "uninterrupted concentration and deepened intimacy with his work."

Laird's works feature compositions of intricately pieced wood, layers of paint, abstract geometric renderings, westcoast landscapes, forming, and figures. He is currently exhibiting a small selection of his work in an international exhibition in the United States, and he has shown 78 pieces in Victoria this year.

Over the years, Laird has worked in a variety of mediums. His first exhibition in Victoria, "Drawn Conclusions" (pencil drawings), was at Open Space Gallery in 1973. In 1975, he exhibited a three dimensional sculpture in a Group Show "Kenesis" at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery. Another one-man show at Open Space was "Photography Explorations." His work has been purchased by the Canada Council Art Bank. He has exhibited in Montreal, London, Ireland, North Africa, Lisbon, Washington and New York.
