James Esworthy has seventeen years of wood-related experience. He is a graduate of Furniture Design at Sheridan College in Ontario (1995). In 2000, he established Red Star Furniture Design, a Vancouver-based manufacturing and design company.

His current influences involve veneer patterns and Art Deco styling. His pieces are distinguished by a high level of attention to detail, tasteful blending metal and wood, and the use of exotic wood veneers.

"My current work is inspired by simple geometrics. Forms are created using circles, squares, rectangles and cones. Surfaces are covered with veneers. Wood as a material is an organic substance; I use it according to its individual character. Colour, pattern, luster and unusualness are some criteria I use when selecting my materials. During the design process the end function of the piece is critical. I believe that the beauty of wood and good design need to go hand in hand."

"The key element in all of my work is my craftsmanship. Attentions to detail and quality construction are of paramount importance to the success of my work and to the success of any design. Craftsmanship to me is when everything is stripped away - the design, the material and the purpose - what is left is craftsmanship; a person's integrity as an individual and as an artist. Even if something falls out of fashion it still retains dignity in its craftsmanship."

With his work "East Indian Rosewood Sideboard" James wanted to create a piece that explored repeating patterns. The repeating pattern of diamonds and ovals on the sideboard are reminiscent of the diamond tufted upholstery used in antique sofas.
