Karl Jones has had a lifelong interest in woodworking. He holds a diploma in Fine Furniture from Camosun College, Victoria, and a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Computer Science.

Karl is strongly influenced by curiosity about how things work and the interplay between function and beauty.

"As I play with my young daughter, I am struck by her fascination with anything in nature that moves - like the wind bending a tree or a spider gliding along its web. This has brought an emphasis on curves, space, and the suggestion of movement into my recent designs."

Karl's work is characterized by straightforward integrity of design and by quality of construction. "The idea for 'Spider Table' hatched when Sally and I were watching a spider scurry as it held a small object. With refinement, the design quickly departed from its creepy origins. Straight lines are kept to a minimum. The joints are emphasized, suggesting articulation of the legs. Ornamentation is integral with the construction."

He currently resides in Cadboro Bay, and operates De Granna Furniture Studios.
