The ceremonial furnishings were a gift from Michael C. Williams, Victoria businessman and owner of the Swans Hotel. Williams came to Canada in 1950 and settled in Victoria eight years later. Williams became a successful businessman, a developer and a heritage conservationist. In 1990 he received an Honorary Degree from the University of Victoria for his work in urban renewal and cultural conservation in downtown Victoria. Michael Williams was a long-time admirer and collector of Northwest Coast Aboriginal art and his original idea was to replace the University's Chancellor chair and stool with pieces showcasing the talents of Aboriginal artists. However, the project grew with UVic becoming the ultimate beneficiary of six magnificent pieces of art representing the collaborative work of Northwest Coast artists.

This web site was created in conjunction with the University of Victoria's centennial celebrations and the Michael Williams Legacy Exhibit, August 25 - October 10, 2003.
