Stephanie Frostad was born and raised in Walla
Walla, Washington. She has enjoyed a steadily rising reputation for
her large, evocative canvasses painted in a style reminiscent of the1930’s
Ashcan School. The tone of her pictures, often landscapes containing
figures, is one of isolation in the expanse of their surroundings.
Frostad was included in the 2001, Third Annual Realism Invitational.
Articles on the artist may be found in ARTnews November 2000; Southwest
Art, December 1999; and Southwest Art, August 2000. The Davidson
Galleries in Seattle, her commercial dealers, observe that “Stephanie
Frostad's narrative paintings open up a dialogue about a culture
that is so bombarded with media that it has forgotten how to discern
visual metaphors. Stephanie paints 'traditionally', with 'traditional'
subjects, but only to put tradition itself into question, exploring
how tradition pervades contemporary consciousness and affects our
interpretations of a given subject.”
