This project has contributed to research on the three significant
collections of Chinese art in British Columbia, a province in
which Chinese-Canadians have had and continue to have and important
influence on the larger society. The collections are held at the
Vancouver Museum, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the
Maltwood Art Museum & Gallery at the University of Victoria.
The project was first exhibited at the Maltwood Art Museum &
Gallery, at the University of Victoria, between September 3, 2002
and December 24, 2002. The current
project exhibition at the Vancouver Museum provides some background
to help visitors understand China's broader cultural legacy in
addition to demonstrating China's active role in international
trade during the 12-19th centuries.

Exhibition Catalogue
A catalogue has been produced to complement the exhibition and
to provide resource material for the Comparative Civilizations
curriculum in BC high schools. Dr. Po Ting Ip made a generous
donation to assist with the publication of this catalogue and
to cover the costs associated with providing free catalogues and
sets of educational questions to all of the public secondary schools
in B.C. as well as to private schools and colleges in the Vancouver
area. "The Far-reaching Legacy of Chinese Culture" symposium
was held at the University of Victoria Sept. 22, 2002. The keynote
speaker was Ms. Jan Stuart, Associate Curator of Porcelains, Arthur
M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
and the other speakers included Ms. Paula Swart, Dr. Erica Dodd,
and Dr. Judith Patt. Dr. Liscomb held a workshop for teachers
from Victoria, Saanich and Sooke, and Ms. Swart will conduct one
for teachers in the Vancouver area. With assistance from History
in Art student Justyna Krol, the Vancouver Museum is providing
tours and educational materials for the general public, ESL students,
and young students..
