THE
UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA STUDENT CO-OP PROGRAMS
- Arts
& Writing Co-op Program
The Arts and Writing Co-op is an educational program that integrates
practical experience with regular academic studies. Employers
provide challenging positions in which students drawn from 19
departments in the Humanities and Fine Arts are able to develop
professional competence. Students are selected by employers
through a competitive process and must maintain at least a B
average during their academic terms to maintain their status
in the Arts & Writing Co-op program.
Work
terms begin in January, May and September and consist of a minimum
of thirteen weeks to four months of full time employment.
British Columbia-based private sector and not-for-profit employers
may be eligible for wage subsidies through the Arts and Writing
Co-op program. CURA may be able to offer additional funding
for some Co-op positions.

educational requirements, location and, if applicable, housing
and transportation arrangements.

THE
BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTS COUNCIL
The
British Columbia
Arts Council offers the following two grant programs that
may be of assistance to CURA projects:
- Museums
and Visual Arts Organization Grants
Museums
and Visual Arts Organization Grants are available for projects
dedicated to the preservation and development of the cultural
heritage of the province. Eligible projects may include critical
documentation, exhibition development and training of curatorial
staff. Maximum assistance will not exceed 50% of project costs.
Limited funds are available.
- Touring
Exhibition Assistance
This
program assists the circulation of contemporary and historical
exhibitions which are confirmed in at least three participating
venues in the province. Eligible expenses include exhibition
fees, artist's fee, audience development and educational activities,
promotion and transportation costs. Maximum assistance is $1,000
per venue.
Application
deadlines are April 15 and October 15 of each year.
Applicants must contact the program coordinator prior to submitting
an application.

BRITISH
COLUMBIA HERITAGE TRUST
The
BC Heritage
Trust supports community initiatives that conserve heritage
property in the province. Proposals to the Heritage Trust may
be submitted at any time.
- Community
Heritage Development
This program supports the research, documentation and interpretation
of heritage property. Grants are available for up to half the
eligible costs to a maximum of $15,000.
- Special
Initiatives
This program supports unique or significant initiatives that
do not meet the criteria of other programs but that will contribute
to the conservation or preservation of BC's heritage. Grants
are available for up to half of project costs to a maximum of
$15,000. Up to $1,000 is available in innovation awards for
small-scale projects.
- Education
and Professional Development
Study grants to a maximum of $500 to assist heritage leaders
to participate in workshops or academic/professional courses
in heritage conservation.

BRITISH
COLUMBIA HERITAGE SOCIETY
The
British Columnia Heritage
Society offers community-based training workshops for the
conservation of heritage resources. Funding is provided by the
BC Heritage Trust Training and Volunteer Management Program. Up
to $1,500 is available to cover professional fees and travel costs
of participants. Application can be made at any time.

BRITISH COLUMBIA MUSEUMS ASSOCIATION
The
British Columbia Museums
Association administers the BC Digital Collections Program,
a two-year, $700,000 initiative to make project assistance available
to the province's museums and galleries community.
The program will provide financial assistance to professional
not-for-profit museums and galleries in BC for the digital imaging
of artifacts and collections to enhance public access.
Key criteria for evaluation of proposed projects will be the nature
and significance of the projects to the public; the extent and
quality of the applicant's previous achievements in digitalizing
collections; and the ability to make information accessible to
the public online.
The BC Digital Collections Program is supported by the British
Columbia Arts Council, a provincially funded agency responsible
for arts and culture development in BC.

CANADA'S
DIGITAL COLLECTION
Industry
Canada invites proposals for Canada's
Digital Collections (CDC) program, an initiative of the Government
of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy. Through this program, Industry
Canada will issue contribution agreements of up to $25,000 each
to fund multimedia projects that provide work experience for young
Canadians aged 15 to 30. These projects involve digital conversion
of analog material and the creation of Web sites for its display
on-line. The production of these collections is also intended
to stimulate the development of viable digitization and multimedia
enterprises that will yield on-going employment opportunities
for Canadian youth while providing on-line access to Canadian
material of public interest.
The application deadline is April 2, 2002. The program is currently

CANADIAN
HERITAGE INFORMATION NETWORK
The Canadian Heritage Information
Network (CHIN) supports Canadian museums in the effort to
create, present and manage Canadian online content for public
access and educational purposes.
The CHIN site provides the heritage community with access to a
wide range of professional resources, including online courses
on image digitization and automated collections management systems,
information about professional events and career opportunities,
research and reference tools, intellectual property publications,
bibliographies, and data dictionaries.
The
following support programs are currently available:
- Virtual
Museum of Canada Program
Through the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), CHIN assists the
Canadian museum community in achieving a collective online presence.
The VMC, which is part of the Canadian Culture Online Program
(CCOP), enables Canadians to freely access, in both official
languages, heritage content and features developed by Canadian
museums and galleries.
Content includes virtual exhibits, games, educational materials,
close to 200,000 images and records of museum treasures, and
information about nearly 2,500 heritage attractions. For further

Museum of Canada (VMC) Investment Program.
- Community
Memories Program
The Community Memories program strengthens the capacity of smaller
museums to create web content by supporting their development
of online local history exhibits. Museums whose proposals are
selected are supplied with user-friendly software and a standard
$5,000 investment.
The program is open to public, not-for-profit museums that have
demonstrated their commitment to work collaboratively with colleagues
across the country by becoming members of the Canadian Heritage
Information Network (CHIN).

CANADIAN
HERITAGE MUSEUMS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The
Department
of Canadian Heritage Museums Assistance Program provides financial
assistance on a project basis to Canadian museums and related
institutions.
Access
and National Outreach
This
program supports projects that connect different regions of Canada.
Projects should link museums, assist the partners to reach diverse
audiences, and reflect Canada's cultural diversity. There are two
options under this program:
- National Outreach Initiative
This option is to support professional exchanges as well as
the development of outreach projects such as travelling exhibitions,
new media initiatives, special educational or interpretative
activities, delivered or circulated in at least three provinces
or territories. Projects are elibible for up to 70% of direct
costs.
- Exhibition Circulation Fund
This option is to assist museums with costs related to the borrowing
of an exhibition originating from a museum in another province
or territory or one of the federal museums. Funding provided
will be up to 50% of the exhibition fee, rental, transportation
or similar costs to a maximum of $5,000.
Aboriginal
Museum Development and Organizational Development
This program assists Aboriginal organizations to preserve their
cultural heritage and to facilitate public understanding of the
diverse cultures of Aboriginal peoples. Support is available for
museum projects carried out in partnership with First Nations
communities or groups. Projects may be eligible for up to 70%
of costs.
Organizational
Development
This program assists museums and their employees to attain
professional standards in areas such as collections care and personnel
development. It supports initiatives which ensure the long term
conservation, preservation or management of collection resources.
Up to 50% of project funding is available.
The
application deadline is November 1 of each year. Responses
may take several months. The department reserves the right to
consider applications at any time throughout the year to the extent
that funds are available

HISTORICA
In
its efforts to promote history and heritage awareness and understanding,
Historica aims to encourage
communities – through charitable organizations – to develop initiatives
that stimulate local history and heritage appreciation. Historica
supports innovative educational projects in the fields of history
and heritage.
Historica will provide up to $15,000 per project. The total
number and amounts of grants awarded every year will vary according
to available funds. Only educational projects in the fields of
history and heritage will be considered for funding.
Historica will accept proposals dated no later than Friday,
September 6, 2002.

HUMAN
RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT CANADA: YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS
- Youth
Internship Canada
The One to One Youth Internship Program provides funding to
eligible cultural organizations to help them hire youth interns.
The program targets out of work youth aged 16 to 30 and stresses
work experience with transferable skills. Funding available
to the employer is usually in the $3,000 to $5,000 range. To
find out more about the One to One Internship program contact
your local HRDC office or see the web site.
- Summer
Career Placement
HRDC provides up to 100% of minimum wage subsidies to non-profit
employers to create career-related summer jobs for high school
and university students. Applications are available from local
HRDC offices. The application deadline is April 2, 2002. Contact

YOUNG CANADA WORKS
Young
Canada Works (YCW) sponsors opportunities with employers by
providing summer placements for high school and post-secondary
students and by making internships available for unemployed college
and university graduates.
- Young
Canada Works in Heritage Institutions
This program provides students with an opportunity to make their
skills available to museums, archives, libraries, and other
cultural and heritage institutions. Successful applicants can
gain hands-on work experience in research, new media, exhibits
and conservation.
- Internships
in Science and Technology
Salary support is offered for internships for science and technology
based projects in heritage and cultural organizations. Internships
are available to post-secondary graduates, under the age or
30, and are for positions of 4 to 12 months. Projects can be
wide ranging from developing information and communication tools,
managing information and collections to using electronic information
systems for networking. Internships begin any time after April
1 and must be completed by April 1 the following year.
