Martha Black, Curator of Ethnology, Royal BC Museum

In November
of last year, the CURA Program and the Royal
British Columbia Museum hosted a five-day seminar for First Nations
cultural researchers. A total of thirteen delegates from seven organizations
and communities met at the University of Victoria to discuss issues
concerning First Nations cultural property research and data collection
with a team of specialists.
Over the
course of the week, participants were introduced to research facilities
at the University of Victoria Library,
the BC Provincial Archives
and the Royal British Columbia
Museum, as well as the holdings of all three institutions. Facilitators
led workshops in such areas as research methodologies, data collection,
on-line research, database management, cultural funding strategies and
training opportunities.
In addition,
delegates had the opportunity to network with other First Nations researchers,
share ideas and identify long-term strategies that will help meet the
needs of First Nations communities.
