'Orchard Gate' for Ada and Norman Yarrow
(ca. 1949)

5720 Patricia Bay Highway, Saanich

Archtitect: P.L. James

Norman Yarrows, son of British shipbuilding magnate Sir. Alfred Yarrows, came to Victoria in 1914 to run the newly purchased Yarrows Limited shipbuilding subsidiary in Esquimalt. The couple built the 'Orchard Gate' for their retirement years. The rambling cottage-style house is well within the English Arts-and-Crafts tradition. A series of gable ended units, joined in a butterfly plan, focus on the vista through extensive landscaped gardens.
