Frederick and Amy Speed House (1939/40)
1578 Ash Road, Gordon Head, Saanich
A curriosity, or architectural folly, Speed was a carpenter fascinated with the writings of Charles Dickens. During WWII he constructed the house with its bold half-timbering and multiciplicity of bracketted oriol windows (even the garage has one) - a story-book evokation of Victorian Englishness by means of a Tudoresque fantasy.
