Untold Stories of British Columbia
March 1-2, 2002

Co-hosted by the CURA Program, the University of Victoria Humanities Centre, the Maltwood Art Museum & Gallery and the Royal British Columbia Museum, this public conference brought to light some of the many untold stories of British Columbia.

A total of 11 guest speakers from universities and cultural institutions across Canada provided participants with a glimpse of history by presenting various topics related to the past and present of BC communities.

Three CURA projects were featured as part of the conference: the Inkameep Day School Art Collection Project presented by Dr. Andrea Walsh, Department of Anthropology, the Japanese Canadian Photographers Project presented by Grace Eiko Thomson, Japanese Canadian National Museum and the Hallmark Society Streetscapes Project presented by Helen Edwards, Hallmark Society of Victoria.

A highlight of the event for CURA participants was a workshop on the interpretation of historical photographs facilitated by Dr. Joan M. Schwartz, National Archives of Canada and Department of Art, Queen’s University.

Two CURA project essays were published in:
Wood, Paul ed. Untold Stories of British Columbia: Papers presented at the conference 'Untold Stories of British Columbia' 1-2 March 2002. Victoria: Humanities Centre, University of Victoria, 2003.

The essays are:
Walsh, Andrea. Drawing on Identity: The Inkameep Day School: 61-70
Edwards, Helen. Fairfield, Victoria: Neighbourhood Stories in Architecture: 71-87.
