Dear Colleague: Welcome to the Third Annual New Media Conference at the University of Victoria. We look forward to an exciting few days starting with the Opening Reception on Sunday night from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Empress Hotel in downtown Victoria. You will be able to pick up your delegate badge at the reception on Sunday night or anytime during the day on Monday of Tuesday at UVic Centre. At Sunday's Opening Reception, you'll hear some short words of welcome to set the tone and direction of the conference and enjoy a full buffet while you network with other delegates, presenters, exhibitors, the media and high-tech companies that belong to the Vancouver Island Advanced Centre (VIATeC). We'll be presenting this hear's Hyperion Award for Excellence to UBC Professor Murray Goldberg, Founder, Developer and President of WebCT. And you'll hear some exciting news about the tour on Monday evening to see the Navigation and Bridge Simulator at the Naval Officer Training Centre from Vice-Admiral Ron Buck, Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific. Buses will leave starting at 5:15 from the University Centre on Monday evening for this special event returning to the University Centre from 8:00 pm onwards every 15 minutes stopping at the Empress Hotel en route for those staying downtown. The plenary and breakout sessions, exhibits and workshops, all take place at the University Centre, University of Victoria on Monday and Tuesday Feb. 12 & 13. For information on getting to UVic from downtown, see the 'Getting Here' section of the NMC web site. We have an exciting exhibit of UVic student multimedia work in the Maltwood Gallery at the University Centre called "Digital Body, Digital Space" showcasing work from the Finearts Lab. We also are pleased to have the SGI Reality Center in the gallery showing the growing use of virtual reality in manufacturing, medicine, collaborative design, digitizing cultural collections and in exploration in hostile environments in mining or under the oceans. A closing reception is planned in the Visual Arts Concourse Gallery, a short walk across campus, where we'll have a chance to say thank you and goodbye until next year with a complimentary bar and appetizers. If you have any logistical questions, please contact Ed Oscapella, Conference Organizer, by e-mail: newmed@uvic.ca or telephone: 472-1690 or call the main switchboard of the Maltwood Gallery during the Conference at 721-6562. We have worked for several months to put together an exciting and focused agenda bringing together experts, visionaries and provocateurs from the world of New Media and high-tech. We hope you will have an interesting, challenging and educational few days. Regards,
