M964.1.8 "Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden" Scroll Silk; Ink; Colours China Although this scroll is signed ChÕien-tÕang Tai Chin (1388-1462), and dated 1421, sixth month of summer, it is probably a later copy rather than original by him. It may have been produced during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Its subject is a legendary gathering of Sung Dynasty scholars in the garden of a government official. Some of the most important scholars of the day are depicted at this probably imaginary meeting, each involved in activities for which they were well known. These include Su Shih, Li Kung-Lin, and Mi Fu. This subject became a popular one for scrolls, and there are about 90 which remain from various periods of Chinese history.
