WELCOME TO ART OF PHYSICS.
The United Nations has declared 2005 the International Year of Physics to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein's "miracle year" when he published a series of scientific papers that revolutionized our conception of space, time, matter and energy, and set the stage for a century of breathtaking discoveries and achievements. To mark this occasion, the Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery at the University of Victoria is pleased to host a special exhibition on the function and aesthetic of scientific imagery.
According to the organizers of the exhibition, Drs. Margret Fincke-Keeler and Arif Babul of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria, scientific imagery is the art of transforming the abstract, be it reams of meticulous measurements detailing the cosmos or streams of computer-generated numbers, into geometric or symbolic representations, thereby rendering it amenable to intuitive understanding.
Throughout history, physicists and astronomers from Ptolemy and Tusi to Einstein and Feynman have always made extensive use of visual imagery. Imagery is the central engine of the explosive growth in scientists effort to elucidate the very origins of the Universe and all structure therein. It is one of the key elements can spark the imagination, leading to the discovery of the unexpected.
The exhibition consists of a representative series of visually stunning images and movies, contributed by scientists including those at the University of Victoria -- and by institutions from around the world, that reflects the physicists and astronomers efforts to render the unseen seen, from the immeasurably tiny quarks to the sheer mind-numbing immensity of the Universe in its entirety.
