The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society "Industry Narratives" project is a multidisciplinary initiative involving socio-historical research and the production of contemporary art using the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society's salmon can label collection as the primary resource of study. These utilitarian labels, with their direct association to industry, commercial art and popular culture, serve to uniquely encapsulate key periods of BC's history.

The research began in the fall of 2001, and a call for artist submissions circulated in October 2001. The lecture series, presenting papers by the student researchers, was held at the Cannery at the end of February.

The research results have been made accessible to the public through a number of means. An exhibition entitled "Trademarks and Salmon Art: A brand new perspective" was held at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery during the summer of 2002. The exhibition featured not only the labels and their associated stories, but also contemporary works of art inspired by the research. An exhibition catalogue with the same title was published in October by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society to serve as permanent documentation of the project research and the exhibition.
